Almonds have a long history with weddings. The sugar-coated almond, affectionately known as the Jordan almond, is a popular wedding favor. The sugar-coated almond symbolises both the sweet (sugar) and bitter (almond) aspects of marriage.
Italians refer to a handful of these petite candies as confetti. In France, similar candies are called dragees. The confetti is then usually packaged in wonderfully designed confetti ribbon made to look like flowers, leaves or butterflies. When packaged in a small ornate box they are called Bonbonniere by the French.
In Italy, five almonds signifies five wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.
Sugarcoated almonds at traditional Greek weddings are called Koufetta. Odd numbers are indivisible, symbolizing how the newlyweds will share everything and remain undivided. Tradition holds that if an unmarried woman puts almonds under her pillow, she'll dream of her future husband.
